We've updated e.Yachad’s format to make it easier to see what's going on in our community with fewer clicks. Tell us what you think!
Love the new format. | I like it less.

February is Jewish Disability Awareness and Inclusion Month (JDAIM) created to increase awareness of the needs of people with disabilities in our community.

Committed to supporting all members of the Jewish disability community, Jewish Federation is proud to support several initiatives throughout February, as part of our overall approach in supporting community members and maximizing participation in Jewish life.

On February 7th, The Jewish Book Festival held 'A Conversation with Golem Girl's Author Riva Lehrer', artist, writer and curator whose work focuses on issues of physical identity and the socially challenged body.

The JCC's 4th annual Community Longing and Belonging Art Show, which features artists of mixed level and ability kicked off February 16th and runs through mid-March. See our events section for more information.

And last week, community members, advocates, and representatives from our advocacy agent the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) met online with members of Parliament and senators for Jewish Disability Advocacy Day on February 17th. They highlighted advocacy priorities, such as supporting social service agencies through COVID; reforming the Disability Tax Credit, and building more affordable housing.

There are still a number of programs happening across our community that celebrates, educates and engages during JDAIM, and we encourage you to check them out in the events section below.

Candace Kwinter on Jewish values, role models and her vision for Federation

Our volunteer leaders are at the heart of our organization. The dedication of their time and expertise contributes to the bettering of our community both locally and abroad. This past year, we have been highlighting our volunteer leaders, so that you can learn more about what drives them to give back to community and get to know this dedicated, diverse group of individuals that we are thrilled to call our board of directors.

At the helm, is our board chair Candace Kwinter. Hear about what Jewish value speaks most to her, what Jewish role model she looks up to and her vision for the future of Jewish Federation.

Jewish Community Foundation Awards $190,000 in Grants

The Jewish Community Foundation’s Unrestricted Grant Program provides charitable organizations in our community with an opportunity to acquire funding for a broad range of initiatives and programs. Designed to complement Jewish Federation’s Annual Campaign allocations process, organizations can access funding for innovative, new initiatives which are not funded through the Annual Campaign.

The Foundation’s Grant Distribution Committee, chaired by Shira Van Den Berg is comprised of a diverse group of community members representing different parts of Greater Vancouver and who have a broad range of community affiliations.

Guided by the Foundation’s depth of expertise in understanding the evolving needs of our community, the grant committee carefully evaluates applications based on stringent criteria. Preferences are typically given to projects and programs that demonstrate impact across the Jewish community and promote collaboration with multiple partners.

The grant committee recently concluded the 2022 grant process, where they evaluated and made grant recommendations to support a wide variety of initiatives that address a broad range of community needs, including program startup costs, implementing new technologies, professional development opportunities, pilot programs, and capital projects and upgrades across the community. The committee's recommendations were approved by Foundation Governors on February 17.

One of the best ways to ensure the Foundation can support the ever-evolving needs of the community is by establishing an unrestricted fund or contributing to one. Contact Marcie Flom, executive director of the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Vancouver, for more information.

Bringing Jewish life to where our community is, is a key aspect of our strategic priorities. Whether it's through a bedtime story from our PJ library program or a Shabbat dinner in Langley with our community outreach initiative Connect Me In, we are committed to making Jewish life and community accessible to people all across British Columbia.

Join PJ Library and Connect Me in for Jew-It-Yourself, a monthly class, and community that is built to help people participate in Judaism for themselves and their families at home.

Sounds interesting? Come and learn about the program at our virtual open-house.

Community Longing and Belonging Art Show

Jewish Federation is proud to support the JCC’s 4th annual Community Longing and Belonging Art show as part of Jewish Disability Awareness and Inclusion Month celebrations. The Inclusion Program asked a group of artists of varying abilities to explore two questions:

  • How do we make meaning of the concept of community, the real and the imagined spaces we inhabit?
  • What does community longing look like and what are the possibilities for belonging in an ever-changing world?
