Position Overview

We’re seeking a bright, caring, and knowledgeable educator who is passionate about making Jewish education fun and meaningful for students of diverse backgrounds aged 6 - 11.

The right candidate will be creative and resourceful and able to lead a class of learners with varying degrees of knowledge independently and collaboratively with other instructors when the classes come together for communal learning at the start and end of each session.

Bright Lights Aleph serves students aged 6 - 9 years old.

Bright LIghts Bet serves students aged 10 - 11 years old.

Candidates should possess an innate love of learning and knowledge of Jewish tradition, text, culture, and heritage.

Desirable Qualifications
- Experience teaching or working with children between the ages of 6 and 11 in a group setting.
- Basic knowledge of Judaism and ability to deliver hands-on learning programs.
- Interest in further deepening your knowledge of Jewish traditions and teaching methodologies.
-Familiarity with Hebrew sufficient to teach beginning Hebrew readers to decode the language of blessings and common Hebrew words.
- Ability to work well with other teachers and communicate with parents.
- Ability to be supervised.

Responsibilities
- Prepare classroom and/ or materials (if needed) and welcome your students before class begins;
- Support students in forming their own Jewish identities. Work with students to explore aspects of Judaism. Work with co-teachers and the Rabbi to track student progress and needs. Develop individualized approaches to support each child’s learning.
- Work collaboratively with other teachers and the Rabbi to teach and supervise children when the whole group is together (such as during _____ or at snack).
- As directed, plan lessons on specific subjects the Rabbi defines (for example, 45 minutes of Hebrew learning covering one blessing or one vowel form, followed by 45 minutes of teaching about a designated theme or subject).
- Communicate with parents directly about each student’s progress and needs (checking in when students are dropped off/picked up).
- After class, put away all materials, make sure the classroom is tidy, and wipe down surfaces.
- Additional work opportunities may be available for periodic afternoon learning, holidays, and events.

This is a part-time, seasonal position from September 2024 to June 2025. Shalom is often closed for major Jewish holidays, and classes may not operate when the public or private schools are not in session or during statutory holidays.

The hourly wage is $30/hour.

Preference is given to candidates who can work two or more days per week:
- Shabbat Sheli (1/Saturday morning/month)
- Bright Lights Aleph (1 class per week, plus up to 1 prep hour per week.)
- Bright LIghts Bet (1 class per week, plus up to 1 prep hour per week.)
