What is on a Seder Plate?
One of the most well known symbols of the Seder is the Seder Plate. The Seder Plate is a special plate that is present at the head of the table during the Passover Seder. The plate traditionally holds 6 items, and each one of them symbolizes a part (or parts) of the Passover story.
But… What is on the Seder Plate?
- Karpas (a green vegetable, often parsley or celery): it should be dipped into salted water before eaten to represent the tears that the Jews shed during our years of slavery.
- Haroset(apple, nuts and spices paste): it symbolizes the mortar used by Jews to build Egyptian structures in our years of slavery.
- Maror(bitter herb, often horseradish): it is meant to remind us of the bitterness of slavery.
- Hazeret(a second bitter herb, often Romaine lettuce): it is also meant to remind us of the bitterness of slavery.
- Zeroa (roasted bone with some meat on it): it represents the Paschal lamb offered as the Passover sacrifice in Biblical times.
- Beitzah (roasted or boiled egg): symbolizes the festival Hagigah sacrifice made in biblical times.
